The United Nations is once again turning its attention to Canada’s treatment of Indigenous peoples. In March 2023, UN Special Rapporteur Francisco Calí Tzay visited Canada to investigate ongoing violations of Indigenous rights. His 10-day fact-finding mission was prompted by serious concerns raised by multiple First Nations—including the Wet’suwet’en, Grassy Narrows, and Tsleil-Waututh—who documented criminalization, environmental harm, and the continued disregard of free, prior, and informed consent. Backed by Amnesty International, the submission to the UN emphasized that Canada’s failure to implement UNDRIP in practice, not just in law, is causing lasting harm to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities.
